2023 What equipment do I need to start learning?

Updated: Jan 29

One major lesson I have learnt from years of playing is you don't have to spend lots of money but if you invest in the right gear you only need to buy it once and it will serve for many years to come. "Buy Cheap, buy Twice"

I will list essential items that every guitarist should own and give you my 100% recommendations on each so it will save you time and money.

Essential Items (all guitarist should own)

Capo

Every guitarist should have one of these in their gig bag. Capo's are used in many songs and they allow you to play a ton more songs as you can move your basic chords into any key.

Tuner

If you are out of tune, then anything you play is going to sound bad. There are Free apps you can use however, these clip on tuners work the best in my opinion. They are quicker, more accurate, more versatile, you can leave them on your guitar and the best thing is you can use them with lots of noise going on in the background! We all will experience noisy environments and these will make sure you can tune still.

SPARE BATTERYS

These tuners both use batteries so worth getting some back ups. Super cheap compared to buying in store!

Plectrums

It's good to have a selection of different thickness plectrums and these are great quality pics

ORGANISATION

Here we look at some great ideas that I could not live without. These help me keep organised so I can save time keeping all sheets together and journal my practice to keep on track of goals and see progress!

Practice Journal

Display Folder

Please contact me about instrument recommendations. Type of instrument and budget you have in mind.

Guitar Cable

Nothing beats a good quality cable. These are built to last, had them for years!

Guitar Strings

Buy the sets - (Cheaper and you have back up strings)

Acoustic

Electric
Classical

String Winder

You can save so much time changing strings when

you have one of these!

All in one TOOL KIT - (Includes Capo and String Winder)

I love this! Great for basic setups and string

changes.

Metronome

Apart from being in tune the other really important thing a musician needs to be able to do is play in time. A metronome is a device that counts bpm for you and the idea its a tool to help play in time.

Budget - FREE

You can use a FREE app. I was using an app when teaching out and about called Metrotimer but it has bad reviews. It has worked great but after doing some digging the best Free app is called The Metronome by Soundbreener

PREMIUM

I use this at home and in my opinion sounds much nicer and looks very nice in a music practice space. Makes you like pro!

I use a Wittner Metronome which are made in Germany. Got it 25 years ago and I love it!

Other ideas which is more of a personal choice as they have different aesthetics, materials and functions

Straps - Just pick what look would suit you and your guitar!

Guitar Stands - Look at Hercules Stands
