What are the best acoustic strings for a beginner?

Guitar Strings are an area where it takes some experience to know what to buy. When searching "Acoustic Guitar Strings" you will find so many different options, different thickness (gauge) materials, coasted or un-coated and brands to consider. I'm going to make your purchase decision much easier.

As a guitarist and teacher who has been playing for 25 years I would always say for a beginner guitarist get a really light gauge of strings. These will be easier to play until you develop strength and dexterity in your fingers then if you decide you want a more "full" sound go up a gauge.

Most acoustic guitars come setup from factory gauge 12 strings. But i would say go for 11's. What this means is the Top thin E string is a 0.11mm thickness and the rest of the strings in the set go up in a logically order to obtain the same tensions.

Next is the material used in each string. When I started there was less string manufactures and materials being used. Although I have played around with different strings and had great results as a beginner just go to basic materials that have been used for years. These will be alot CHEAPER too!

I'd always recommend phosphor bronze to students as they suit the sound of smaller medium size acoustics which will give you a lovely balanced sound.
